The Harmonized System (HS) code is an internationally standardized system of names and numbers to classify traded products. Developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), it is used by over 200 countries as a basis for their customs tariffs and for the collection of international trade statistics.
HS codes are uniform up to the first 6 digits globally, with individual countries adding further digits for more specific classifications. These codes are periodically updated to reflect changes in trade practices, with the latest major update occurring in 2017.
