Barbados – Important Facts

Barbados is a sovereign island country in the Lesser Antilles, in the Americas. It is 34 kilometres (21 miles) in length and up to 23 km (14 mi) in width, covering an area of 432 km2 (167 sq mi). It is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic and 100 km (62 mi) east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea, it is about 168 km (104 mi) east of the islands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and 400 km (250 mi) north-east of Trinidad and Tobago. Barbados is outside of the principal Atlantic hurricane belt. Its capital is Bridgetown. Barbados is 1,600 mi (2,600 km) South east of Miami.

Barbados was in the past heavily dependent on the export of sugar as its main revenue earner, but in recent decades the economy has diversified into tourism and finance. It also has offshore reserves of oil and natural gas.

The Barbadian economy is expected to grow by 2% in 2015. At the end of February 2015, annual inflation was measured at 1.7%. The unemployment rate remained around 11.5%. Net International Reserves remained at USD $550 million. In May 2015, government announced that the tourism sector enjoyed a robust winter season with arrivals breaking a 25 year – old record for arrivals. Arrivals from the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America grew by 12.9%, 27.7%, 23.6%, 28.4 % and 10.6 %, respectively.

The United States has a trade surplus with Barbados, and approximately 32% of Barbados imports come from the United States.
Barbados per capita income is one of the highest in the Eastern Caribbean region at USD $13,576 and the country ranks high in the United Nations Development Program’s Human Development Index. Education and other social services remain a top priority for the Government.
